Turks and Caicos Expat Insurance

International Health Insurance Quote

The Turks and Caicos are among the numerous British overseas territories in the Caribbean and are a favorite destination for expats and tourists due to the environment, glistening shores, and way of life. Tourism and Financial Services are the biggest propellers of the country’s economy, including overseas banking and trust management. Tourism continues to be the most significant supporter of the economy, followed closely by a robust finance sector. The majority of the visitors land in the main area of Providenciales, aka Provo. The country has strong relations with Canada. From the middle of 2025, the estimated population of the Turks and Caicos Islands is approximately 46,900, which is an indicator of the modest rise from previous years. The overwhelming majority lives on Providenciales, the main island, with a much smaller population residing in Cockburn Town on Grand Turk, which is the capital. The percentage of crimes across the island is quite low in contrast to other parts of the Caribbean, but one should adopt the routine precautionary measures, especially at night. For prolonged stays, securing Turks and Caicos expat insurance is an important step toward a stress-free life.

Healthcare in Turks and Caicos

The Turks and Caicos National Health Insurance Program (NHIP), which was rolled out in 2009, makes it compulsory for residents and employed expats to register, with a 6% level of participation divided equally between businesses and their staff (limited to a monthly income threshold). Services are comprehensive and include primary care, preventive services, and Overseas Treatment referrals for the general population. Providenciales has good medical facilities, and day-to-day healthcare and emergency services are handled by private clinics. The Cheshire Hall Medical Centre in Providenciales and Cockburn Town on Grand Turk forms the core public hospital system, offering emergency, surgical (including obstetrics), maternity, high-dependency, neonatal, and specialty services. They are managed by InterHealth Canada and accredited internationally. While these facilities offer a strong base for expat healthcare Turks and Caicos, there are pharmacies and dental offices available for expats and tourists alike. While the Turks and Caicos Islands have two modern public hospitals: Cheshire Hall Medical Centre in Providenciales and the Cockburn Town Medical Centre on Grand Turk offering emergency, surgical (including obstetrics), maternity, high dependency, neonatal, and various specialty services, these facilities provide primarily secondary-level care with limited bed capacity and resources found on the mainland. To know about the healthcare system in Turks and Caicos, check out our healthcare region page.

Insurance for Expat in Turks and Caicos

Most health insurance and care are provided by employers in Turks and Caicos. The National Health Insurance Plan (NHIP) is mandatory for legal residents and employed individuals. It offers a generous benefits package (primary, secondary care, immunizations, Overseas Treatment), with minimal co-payments, e.g., $10 per visit, capped at a small annual maximum that confirms the entire population is ensured against meeting the costs associated with ill health and injuries. However, most expatriates and especially visitors will be responsible for obtaining adequate international health insurance in Turks and Caicos from an insurance broker such as Expat Financial, especially if they want to receive coverage and treatment off the island and in the USA or Canada. Medical evacuation coverage for expats and tourists in Turks and Caicos is essential, as most will want to seek treatment off the island for any major illnesses or injuries.

If moving to the Turks and Caicos as an expat is on your mind, it would be wise to consider the following different categories of insurance coverage, including insurance for expats in Turks and Caicos that can be very useful:

  • International Health Insurance

  • Travel Insurance
  • Evacuation Coverage
